The Void
A SCI-Arc extension exploring void, folding, and cross-programming to choreograph privacy and openness.
Description
The extension project for SCI-Arc, inspired by OMA’s strategies of the void, folding, and cross-programming, is a bold exploration of spatial dynamics and architectural innovation. Drawing upon these principles, the design concept seamlessly blends privacy and transparency to create a dynamic learning environment that fosters creativity and collaboration. The project begins with the conceptualization of four basic geometries, each meticulously crafted to maximize spatial efficiency and functionality. These geometries are then fragmented into modular components and distributed across six floors, laying the groundwork for a multi-dimensional architectural experience. Utilizing the strategy of folding, the design introduces a series of void volumes that serve as spatial dividers, delineating private and public realms within the structure. Within these void volumes, the space is intimate and secluded, offering students and faculty a sanctuary for focused study, small group meetings, or moments of respite. Meanwhile, outside the void volumes, the atmosphere is open and inviting, with classrooms, studios, exhibition galleries, and entertainment areas seamlessly integrated into the architectural fabric. At the heart of the design concept lies the juxtaposition of transparency and privacy, reflected in both the architectural elements and the mission of the institution. The glass facade and open spaces create a sense of accessibility and inclusivity, inviting students, researchers, and architects to engage with the built environment. Simultaneously, the privacy afforded within the void volumes ensures a sense of security and focus for the SCI-Arc community. As pedestrians pass by the institution, the transparent facade offers a glimpse into the vibrant life of the school, fostering curiosity and connection with the broader community. Through this interplay of transparency and privacy, the project transcends its physical boundaries to become a dynamic symbol of architectural innovation and educational excellence.
